Powering up a generator safely comes down to a consistent start-up sequence, good ventilation, and protecting whatever you plug in. Always use the owner’s manual for your specific model, but the steps below work for most portable gasoline generators.
Move the generator outdoors on a flat, dry surface—never inside a home, garage, shed, or near open windows. Keep it at least 20 feet from doors and vents so exhaust can’t drift indoors. Check for obvious fuel leaks, loose cords, or damage before starting.

For recoil start, pull the cord smoothly until you feel resistance, then pull firmly. For electric start, hold the start switch until the engine catches, then release. Let it run for a minute, then gradually move the choke to RUN/OPEN as the engine warms.
Flip the generator’s breaker to ON, then plug in devices one at a time. Start with the largest load first (like a refrigerator), then add smaller items. If you’re using a transfer switch for home circuits, engage it according to its instructions—never backfeed through a wall outlet.
