Certain historical pigments and surface treatments may contain substances best avoided with prolonged skin contact, especially if the surface is flaking or powdery.
Start with a professional assessment from a qualified jeweler or conservator familiar with antique construction. Ask for a gentle cleaning only—aggressive polishing can remove patina, inscriptions, or original tool marks. For wear, choose low-impact occasions, avoid water and sweat, and remove the piece before exercise, showering, or applying lotion and perfume.
Consider protective adjustments that don’t permanently alter the artifact: adding an inner liner to a ring, using a modern chain to carry an ancient pendant, or placing a fragile cameo into a protective mount. For pieces with uncertain composition, keep wear time short and store them in a dry, padded container away from chemicals.
